Synopsis
Breaking the Habit: Hautboy Series Book 2
Barely escaping her marriage alive, Emelia Cipollini has resolved to live a quiet life in the countryside, but fate has other plans. With her ex out of prison, the loss of her job, and a heartbreaking rejection, all arrows point toward a new beginning in Seattle with best friend, Cooper Hale.
Shane Richardson, drummer for world famous rock band, Hautboy, complicates things. His habits are anything but conforming to her lifestyle, but when the bad boy plays it straight, will he stay off the drugs and alcohol long enough to win her trust, or will he become a repeat of her past?

Excerpt
“It’s fine, Emelia,” said Shane, reaching past me for the knob.  Contrariwise, I thought he was pilfering another kiss.  I met his lips halfway.  No matter how guilty I felt, I shouldn’t have done it.  Nothing changed.  I still had ties binding me to area.  I couldn’t do it.  I couldn’t abandon my daughter, couldn’t forget her.
Nonetheless, I leaned into him, my hands resting against his chest.  A shock of desire raced through my veins.  It felt like flames were devouring every inch of me, centering between my thighs.  It had been years since I’d been this close to a man, and I’d forgotten all the aspects of their masculinity.  The scent of their cologne, the chafe of stubble, the hardness of their bodies, it all acted as fuel to the fire blazing inside of me.
Reaching down, Shane lifted my legs over his hips, slipping between my thighs.  My ankles crossed behind his back, pulling him fully against me.  He leveraged my weight against the house, rolled his hips, pressing himself against my core.  I moaned when he reached the apex, and mirrored his movement, pivoting my hips so that I could extort the most pleasure from his touch.
Lost as I was to this heady sensation, when I heard a sharp rap on the door behind me, followed by Carter Strickland’s jarring voice, I nearly jumped out of my skin.  “For a recluse, you sure are demanding a lot of attention.”
“Fuck off,” Shane grumbled, though he made no move to put me down.  I was fairly sure he was using me to hide his raging hard on at this point.
“I will as soon as you get off the fucking door bell, dick wad.”  From the corner of my eye, I saw Carter gesture behind me.  “Thing’s been ringing like we’re St Paul’s Cathedral.”
With only the storm door barring us from the inside, I could hear the repetitive peal of bells.  The air left my lungs in a fit of humiliation.  “Merda.”  I quickly dismounted Shane and fixed my clothes.  Carter watched with unreserved amusement.

About Anne Berkeley
AnneBerkeley.jpg
My name is Anne Berkeley. I'm a full time cubicle dweller, wife and mother of two beautiful children. I do all things creative. Photoshop, photography, scrapbooking, decorating, barbering, and I would like to think...writing.

I dream up most of my material during my seventy-five minute commute to work. Some of it comes to fruition and other times it's edited out again. But I hope that what made the cut is worthy of note.

I write paranormal romance novels for adults. No not erotica. Though there are some steamy scenes. I'm working on several novels at the present. Yes, more than one. I jump back and forth as my mood dictates. It's the way I work best. Tempestuous, my first novel, released in 2012, Torrid in 2013 and Feral, the first of a new series in 2013. I'm working to complete Turbulent (Third and final novel for the Tempestuous series), a second novel for the Feral series, and two standalone novels.

                                                                  No one is perfect.

I wish I could scream it at them, but no one will listen to me. Instead, they choose to ignore me by making me into something I’m not. I try to make them happy, but no matter how hard I try it’s not good enough. I make good grades. Hell, I was top of my class senior year, but things happen. We make sacrifices for people important to us. My parents wouldn’t understand that. Instead, they say I could be better. I’m the good girl to everyone else, but to my parents I fall short. To most I have curves, to them I’m fat. I just want them to be happy with my imperfections. You know what? I’m tired of giving and getting nothing in return. Screw them.

The only one that I want to see me for who I really am…is him.

TARALYNN EVANS has always been the good girl, forced to befriend people she cares nothing about. She tries hard to be what them and everyone else expects her to be, but what’s the point when it’s never enough to gain their approval? She’s over lying to make others happy or self-sacrificing to spare their feelings. For once, she just wants to be herself. She wants to feel human, tired of being a puppet.
When tragedy strikes her in the worst way, she finds herself bargaining in distress, trying to find reason and rationality in what’s set before her, but will he give in when in most cases the good girl never gets the bad boy?

                                                              Ink, sex, lies, loyalty.

Those are the things that define me, and my life. I do me. Nothing else matters. I don’t need anyone’s approval, nor do I seek it. I’m comfortable with the man I am. The only thing that haunts my dreams are those sapphire eyes that remind me of midnight. I will shut it down every single time. I can’t have her. She deserves more than what I’m after. The problem is that sometimes life is a bitch. That curveball was nowhere in sight, but now that it’s been thrown…my life may never be the same.
SHAWN BRADEN has always been the bad boy. He’s always had the love and support of his parents no matter what he does. He knows he can have any girl he wants. Too bad he never wants them more than once. What he truly wants is the one thing he’s never admitting to, not even to himself. What happens when he starts seeing past the facade she’s put on for years and shows him the real girl that is hiding inside? Will he fall against his will, or will she become nothing more than every girl before?

"Why the fuck was that prick bringing you home?"
After Mason made it known yesterday morning that I'm sleeping with Jared, you'd think Shawn would know the answer to that question. He probably does. He just wants me to verbalize it. I'm not going to.
"Leave it, Shawn." I twist around and pin him with a stare. Next, I toss the tequila back, but this time my eyes widen. Ok, maybe my buzz wasn't so much gone like I originally thought.
       Wow. That was stout.
"How much have you had to drink?"
"Enough that I should be in bed." What's with the twenty questions? More importantly why does he even care? From what I saw earlier tonight, or last night really, Shawn and Mason left with the brunette trash from Level. I don't have to guess what they left to go do and I certainly don't want to imagine it.
"So, let me get this straight. You, drunk, got onto the back of Cole's bike? Are you fucking crazy, Tara?" He doesn't wait for a reply. "Or do you have a death wish?"
"Neither, are you done now?" His palm smacks the side of the refrigerator before turning. Moments later, I hear the door to the half bathroom down the hall slam closed.
I turn back around, pour yet another glass and down it. I'm going to pay for this when I wake up and it's going to be so much worse than yesterday morning's hangover. Screw it. If I'm going to do it in the first place, might as well do it right.
"You know, it's only a matter of time before Holly has him back in her grasps. You don't stand a chance with Shawn; you never have." Cassie's catty bitch-ass voice assaults my ears. Sometimes she's worse than Amanda. I put up with Mandy’s shit because she is dating my best friend, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I deal with this bitch’s crap. Without giving it a bit of thought, I turn and leap forward. She needs a good butt kicking. I'm not a fighter. I know I can take her if I tried, but I don't actively seek out confrontations. My mother would flip her lid, so I do what's necessary to avoid that at all cost.
Before I reach her, a set of massive arms grab me by the waist, pulling me backwards and against his hard chest. "Get. Out. Of. My. House." Shawn bites each word out through clenched teeth. I know they aren't directed at me. Even if I weren’t looking at her shocked expression, I'd know they are aimed at Cassie Winston.
       "What?"
"I don't think he stuttered, Barbie?" Okay, Barbie is usually held for Holly, the queen bitch herself, but I had to. Sue me if you don't like it. I don’t usually act like this, but I’ve had a fair share of alcohol tonight.
"You won't disrespect her, or anyone else that lives here. Last time I checked, you don't live here… so leave." His words are still a bark. Shawn can come off quite scary at times. Frankly, Cassie looks like she is about to pee her pants. Inside, I'm loving it. This is so much better than me punching her. "Or I could let Tara go, but I don't think you want me to. Trust me, she will crush you.
"I will? Hell, I don't know if I will or not. I've never hit another person in my life. I'm bigger than Cassie, sure, in every way, but I'm not going there.
The snootiness crosses her face again. It's the same one my mother wears around me. She should have been my mother's kid. I'm certain her and my mother would get along much better than my mother and I do. "Yes, she would.
"Oh that bitch went there. Yes, I have issues with my weight. I'm not over weight, I don't think, but I’m not thin or skinny by any means, and it doesn't matter how much I work out, I'm never going to be a small size. I love to cook and I love to eat the food I cook. It's just not in the cards for me. Doesn't mean I like it, but she doesn't have a right to throw it in my face, especially with Shawn standing here.
I try to jump forward, but Shawn's hold on me tightens. "Leave. Now." Another bark, only this time his voice is deeper. It's a warning.
"Whatever." She turns, exiting the kitchen followed by the house as quickly as her feet will move.
Once I hear the door click closed he releases me, and as he steps backwards the warm flannel shirt I'm wearing, Jared’s shirt, is pulled off my body. I turn, facing Shawn. What the heck is that about?
"Go take a shower?" My jaw drops. He rips the shirt down the middle, making two un-wearable pieces. What the flyin...
The material is disregarded and lands on the tile floor.
I plant my hands on my hips in a defiant gesture. He's not about to order me around. I might take that crap from my parents, but I won't from anyone else. "Excuse me?"
Shawn wastes no time. He springs forward in an instant, making me step backwards until my back collides with the wall. He continues to close in, placing his palms on the flat surface of the wall next to my face and leans in. "You smell like him and I don't fucking like it.
        "Oh tough shit."
Because you smelling like a cheap whore is so much better," I lash back. I don't waste my time either. I take both of my hands, placing my palms on his chest and pushing as hard as I can. It might not have come across as a shove, because his body didn't move away from mine as much as I intended it to. "Piss off, Shawn." With those last words I leave the kitchen, taking myself up the stairs to my bedroom for a shower… and not because Shawn ordered me to, but because I do in fact stink.
If I weren't as drunk as I am right now, I might have stopped to analyze what just happened between us, but I don't. I'm going to struggle enough just getting out of my clothes to shower tonight, or this morning, or whatever the hell time of the day this is.
Mother effin' jerk, he is.

MEET N.E. HENDERSON

Hi, I’m Nancy,
I’m a mom, wife, writer, obsessed reader, and fiction whore to the chore. I’m an introvert. It takes me a minute to warm up to people, but once I do, you’ll probably never get me to shut up.
I live in the south, Mississippi to be exact. I love warm sunny days and I despise cold and raining weather. I have a love/hate relationship with my Bull Terrier, Xena. The little winch thinks my husband belongs to her when he most certainly does not; he belongs to me.
I love to read possibly even more than I love to write. That can be a problem when I have fictional people taking up room inside my brain and screaming to get out. They don’t understand why I can’t give them my full attention.
In my free time, I love riding my Can Am Maverick and finding new off road trails. I’m a city girl, married to a country boy, who likes to get a little dirty and sometimes muddy. Even though I don’t do it often, I love roller coasters. The steel coasters that is. I hate the wooden ones.
Readers, connect with me. I love hearing from you and reading your reviews.

xoxo,

Long Excerpt:
My head is still pounding when my eyes flutter open the next day. My brain is throbbing inside my skull and I punch the pillow underneath me, scaring Jinx out of his slumber. He meows in protest before hopping off the bed. Looking around, I’m in my bed. How did I get here? I groan in pain as I prop my pillows up and lean my head back against them. It’s then that I feel the eyes on me. Tilting my head straight again, I glance out my window. My eyes lock with those big brown eyes of Jared’s across the way. He looks down to his phone and back up again. My phone chimes with an incoming text.
“UGHHH!” I moan, blindly reaching for it. It slips a few times before I grasp it between my fingers and look down to read.
How are you feeling?
Closing one eye, I text back, Like someone ran over me with a truck, then backed up and ran me over again.
Lowering my phone, I watch as he smiles from my text and disappears from view. I’m trying to piece last night back together; it’s like a fragmented mirror that has shattered all over the corners of my mind. I remember laughing with Ro about her sexual conquests and then I remember red and blue lights and… Jared. Starting to feel hot, I throw the covers off of me and lay like a starfish, trying to get my mind to focus. Glancing down, I notice I’m wearing my pajamas. Before I can process any further, the door to my room creaks open. Jared walks in with a cup of water and a closed fist.
“How did you get in?!” I yelp, trying to sit up in bed, and pulling the covers back over my braless tank top.
“I left the back door open when I left last night,” he informs me as he opens his fist to show me he brought a hand full of Advil.
“You brought me home last night?” I rub my head before reaching for the pills and water.
“Yup, after you called me to pick you up from the police station.”
“I WAS WHERE?!” I scream as water comes spraying out of my mouth.
“Police station. Apparently, you popped a guy in the face.” He smirks.
I squint my eyes, vaguely remembering the heavyset guy that tried grabbing my ass in front of the bar.
“Whoa!” I have to lean my head back against my pillows when the information begins to become too much for me. “If you took me home, how did I get into pajamas?!
The smile that crosses Jared’s face is a mixture of a blush and a sly smirk that makes my insides twist with anticipation and excitement. “Jared…”
“That… you did on your own. I had nothing to do with that!” He holds his hands up in surrender.
“What? I just stripped in front of you!”
“Well, once you got your shirt off, there was really no stopping you…” he teases and my eyes widen in embarrassment.
“Oh my God!” I slump down, pulling the covers back up to my face. “Did we… ya know…” I mutter, completely mortified now.
“Uh, that would be a no.”
“Oh, thank God!” I sigh.
“Thanks a lot!” He comes to his feet now, turning to look out the window.
“Not like that, it’s just … I don’t like to do things I’m not conscious for.”
“Yea, completely plastered girls that get arrested and throw up in bushes are really sexy!” His voice drips with sarcasm.
“I threw up?!This just gets better and better.
“Twice.”
“Twice?” I’m mortified, staring at his amused face.
“Well, after the first time I thought maybe you needed something to eat.”
“Oh no…”
“Yeah… I’ve never seen someone eat a Big Mac that fast before…” He stares at the wall as if remembering my weak moment.
“Oh my God!” I groan, throwing the covers over my entire body. I curl up in a fetal position, planning to never come out again. The room grows silent. It’s starting to get hard to breathe under the sheets when I feel the mattress by my feet cave slightly.
“Come on, it’s not that bad. We all have our moments.” He pats my feet through the sheets.
“Just when I think I’ve reached rock bottom, things just seem to drops out from under me and I’m at an all new low!” I roll over, trying to pull the covers with me, but Jared’s weight prevents it. My head comes peeking out as I roll over, facing away from him.
“April, I think I just determined your major.”
“What?” I curiously twist to look at him again.
“Drama. You’re such an actress. Now, put your big girl panties on and get up!”
I stare at him for a second; did he just say what I think he said? He waits about two seconds before getting up and opening a drawer to my dresser. “Are they in here? Nope!” He closes it and opens another.
“STOP!” I scream, stumbling out of bed, horrified.
“How ‘bout this one?”
“Okay! Okay! I’m up!” I slam the drawer closed just in time to save myself further embarrassment when Jared eyes my plain old undergarments. I sigh when the pounding in my head launches my stomach into action and I collapse onto the corner of the bed.
“You okay?”
“I refuse to puke again!” I respond, taking another deep breath. “Jared…”
“Yea…”
“I could use some donuts.”
“Okay.” He pauses for a few seconds, looking down at his feet before adding, “I’ll be outside then.”
And he leaves me alone in my room.
Short Steamy Excerpt:
“Why, Jared Hoffman, do you not want this?” I tease, slowly unbuttoning his shirt.
He smiles, his hands bracing themselves on the bed at either side of my head. “I didn’t say that... it’s just I don’t want to rush anything.”
Jared’s shirt falls open when I finally reach the last button. His perfect abs are shadowed and defined by the moonlight. My eyes start up his chest. “Rush?” I whisper softly as my hands graze their way up his biceps that frame my face. “Jare… this has been seven long years in the making. I think we’ve waited long enough.”
He pauses for a second. I hear his breath hitch in his throat as his dark eyes study my face. For some reason, I’m surprised when I feel Jared’s lips on mine. The passion between us is renewed at my admission. It’s my turn to moan against his lips. My legs automatically slide up and down his, causing my dress to hike up slightly before my legs wrap themselves around his waist. His hands make their way up my side slowly as if ingraining into memory the curve of my body. My hands have automatically found their way to his belt. I slip my fingers through it and release the hook, swinging it open. Before I know it, I’m unbuttoning his jeans. That’s when I feel his hands squeeze me tight. His lips leave mine for the first time since I spoke, and I feel them slowly trace their way down my neck. My fists clench against the skin on his waist.
“Oh, Jared,” I groan.
His body freezes above me for a fraction of a second. His head lifts out of the crook of my neck to meet my eyes again.
“Do you know how long I’ve waited to hear you call my name like that?” he whispers.
My hands find their way to his face and mingle with his hair. “There’s more where that came from.” I shoot him a sexy smirk before pulling his lips back to mine.

My Review
WOW! All I can say is this book was an emotional rollercoaster. The first few chapters had me in tears. April is a college student in love with Hunter. Things are not going well with their relationship. The struggles she endures is gut wrenching. I could so relate with this character and understand her feelings and the utter despair she felt. For April the worse thing was that she lost herself. Jared her childhood friend and next door neighbor is the one to show her who she use to be. Jared will help April find and rediscover who she once was. Before Hunter changed and destroyed her. This book had me laughing in so many different parts and it had me angry. I love it when I am able to lose myself in a book and get so wrapped up in a variety of emotions. This book is one I would highly recommend to family and friends. It's got a little bit of everything and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I give this a 5 star rating.
